Rapha Urban Hill Climb
Not usually a hill climb specialist but the attraction of an urban hill climb lured me in!
Lucky my girlfriend lives just around the corner from the event, so after finishing work I drove up to Hampstead. On route the heavens opened – so much rain was falling that the M40 traffic slowed to a pace where I would have been better off being on the bike!
Thankfully after kitting up the skies cleared ready for the evening’s event.
The event had already started when I arrived so unfortunately I wasn’t able to pre-ride the cross.
I walked up the climb so I could mentally prepare myself for what was in store.
The climb started fairly gradually, levelled briefly before ramping up.
I set off at 19:56.
Scorching away in the big ring, the plan was to shift down on the flat prior to attacking the real climb.
Everything was going perfectly my friends could hear the commentator mentioning Schleck and they could only assume it was because I was climbing so well.
Little did they know however that on the steepest part of the climb my chain had given up!!
The commentator instructed me to fix it and have another go as he had been impressed with what he saw.
I did just that – thanks to the chap who kindly lent me his chain tool.
Second time round and as soon as I started I could feel the previous effort in my legs.
I pushed on as hard as I could through the crowds of people the noise was immense enabling me to push on through the pain.
Over the top and I was happy I’d given it all I had.
I finished a respectable 13th place (unlucky for some?!).
A hugely successful event and one I’ll be looking forward to competing in again next year!

Tim Stimpson riding the Wilier Lavaredo for charity……
We all know of people who have been effected by Cancer or Ill health and we all try to help raise funds to try to help people, especially young people overcome these disadvantages. My best mate was diagnosed with Cancer 5 years ago but with the help of Dr McMahon he was successfully operated on to remove the Cancer from his brain and now he has set up a Charity, the Danny Porter Foundation to raise money for the Hospital that saved his life. We cycled from Glasgow to Sheffield over 300 miles and so far we have raised over £30,000.
Wilier kindly gave me an amazing bike to do the ride on and I am pretty sure I had the best bike out of all the rugby lads and I just want to say thank you. I am looking forward to riding on more money raising and morale boosting Charity Bike Rides with my friends from the Wooden Spoon and I can now say how much I enjoy cycling and the challenge of staying fit enough to do such a great Bike justice!

New Wilier Gran Turismo 1st look………..
The amazing Gran Turismo gets a 1st look on www.bikeradar.com and www.road.cc
Wilier UK are delighted to introduce the Gran Turismo for 2011.
The aim was to produce a high-performance frame that has the efficiency & stiffness of a high quality road race frame yet is easy to handle & comfortable over long distances. The frame is laterally stiff so it is safe & easy to descend on. It is ideal for Sportive/Granfondo riding but is definitely aimed at performance riders.
The Gran Turismo (hereafter GT) has a standard seat post & conventional threaded BB so it is easy to live with, service, maintain & pack for travel.
With over 100 years of knowledge, love and experience invested in the frame, the GT massively honours the Wilier heritage. The name reflects the racing, luxury / long distance nature of the bike, complete with Italian glamour and pinache.
The stiffness has been achieved through careful carbon-layup combined with what Wilier call “Razor Edge” design. On the front triangle this can be seen as a system of sharp edges on the tube sections that give the tubes stiffness by virtue of their cross sections. The same philosophy can be seen on the fork which are semi-aero but have a pronounced ridge specifically positioned to add stiffness.
The main triangle uses the same technology as the range topping Cento 1; it is a 3 piece monocouque consisting of a one-piece front triangle assembly with 2 seat stay/chain stay sections at the back. The seat stays are asymmetric to take account of the different loads & dropouts are fully carbon, no stress raising joints with alloy dropouts etc. The seat stays are very slender to aid comfort and also add to the sleek and svelte look of the GT.
Cable routing is all internal but has been designed so it is easy to thread through replacement cables avoiding maintenance hassles. The rear brake cable exits very cleanly at the rear of the seat tube, ditto with the rear gear cable exit from the chain stay which is equally clean.
Two build options will be available in the UK with either Athena or Chorus group sets.
There are 6 sizes, XS-XXl. Tube diameters are optimised for each size to ensure frame characteristics are the same across all sizes. This involves 3 separate mould / size; this is an expensive process but worth it to achieve a perfect ride.
The bikes will all feature FSA finishing kit & chain sets that are co-branded with Wilier designed graphics. These are the result of the close cooperation between Wilier & FSA. The result is a totally integrated finish to the bike where colours & graphics are all complementary.
Available in 3 colours, red/white (image attached), red/blue and carbon finish, the frame looks stunning whatever your choice.
The GT will be available through the Wilier dealer network from September 2010.
